IMBOLC: An Altar to Brigid

IMBOLC

Making an Altar to Brigid at the Sacred Waters

Saturday, February 3rd, 2024

11 AM-1:30 PM

Brigid is shown here “putting Winter to sleep;” art by John Quigley, Printed in Ireland, 2000

Imbolc, Imbolg, Oimelc are all variations of the celebration of BRIGID, who also has many names!

Feb 1st marks the half-way point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, and is sometimes called “1st Spring.”

Join Mary Katherine Spain and Kristi Dawson in this high ceremony that honors the power of water, fire, and Brigid!

Although there may still be snow on the ground, the warmth of the sun and the power of the LIGHT is growing more and more. This increase is a welcomed sign to the animals and birds. The seeds deep within Mother Earth’s bosom know what’s coming: LIFE

In Ireland, Scotland and Wales, Brigid is the Goddess of the Hearth, Healing, Poetry and Smithcraft. She is associated with the lactating ewes who start to show signs of new life at this time, and therefore she is connected to Fertility

Brigid asks us: What are we capable of creating that will sustain us, wake us up, heal us from within?

In this ceremony, you will:

  • Learn about the Goddess Brigid and the Abbess Brigid of Kildare as well as the Cailleach, the Queen of Winter whose power is ancient
  • Honor the waters of Avalon by creating an altar to Brigid with Clooties–an ancient practice of praying into a blessed cloth and hanging the cloth by a sacred well
  • Learn invocations that call Brigid’s help to you
  • Experience an activation blessed by fire, as the forge is Brigid’s sacred place of transformation
  • Sacrifice one thing you can part with, to honor Brigid and her presence in your heart-light

We will end our time together like any good Celts: by sharing delicious food! So bring a potluck dish to share as well as your own travel mug (hot water and coffee will be provided).

WHEN: Saturday, February 3rd from 11 AM–1:30/2ish (arrive anytime before 11)

WHERE: Avalon Acres [167 Mansion Rd, Hollis, ME]
