TALKING CIRCLE and COUNCIL

 What is a Talking Circle?

  • A Talking Circle is one of the oldest forms of “active listening” there is. Traditionally a Native American practice, peoples of several cultures and orientations hold circle or council to discuss a problem, share wisdom, and simply be together in a sacred way.

What is a Sacred Way?

  • Sacred Way/ Sacred Space is a time of communion that allows for people to share in a way that is “outside of regular time.” The Directions are opened, people are smudged, and an intention is set. There is very often singing as well as drumming in declaring the space as sacred

Who is invited?

  • All are invited, all are welcome. Confidentiality is the number one rule; people may share through spoken word as long as they like–uninterrupted. There is a talking piece or stick that is passed to the left after the person is finished.

Why hold Talking Circles and Council?

  • We are now living in a time where we are being pelted with information from every direction (and alas, other forms of wisdom are being drowned out). Some information is good to know; other information is absorbed by us when it isn’t helpful yet we “take it in” simply because it’s there. Some people are yearning to be with others in community who are curious about people’s lived experiences, interested in hearing different perspectives, and are hungry for a space to express freely.

The Talking Circles will commence on Thursday, July 13th, at 6 PM, at Avalon Acres. If weather is nice, we will sit around a small, ceremonial fire. Drums and rattles are welcome, as are ALL AGES and genders.

Talking Circles will be co-facilitated by Darlene Harvey and Mary Katherine Spain. For more information or inquiry, email Mary Katherine at: ninepillarshealing@gmail.com or call/ text her at (207) 939-6863

Talking Circles and Council will be hosted by Avalon Acres of Hollis, Maine
